Upper deck: 26 × 9-pounders (12-pounders from 1743).Overall I make HMS Dauntless to be an 86 gun ship of the line, and the image in the OP for the Dauntless is just outright wrong, not least for having the wrong number of decks, but also a forecastle where the Dauntless doesn't have one, and the aftercastle is too big, and there's a gold filigreed figurehead where the Dauntless doesn't have one at all, as seen when it runs over the small boat during the hijacking of the Interceptor.Īlthough I do question the Admiralty assigning a 1st Rate to an overseas station during peacetime, a Second Rate would be a more likely Flagship for a post outside Home Waters. That same scene also shows them running out a carronade on the aftercastle that I'm pretty sure wasn't there earlier, but since such carronades are explicitly not part of the gun count when it comes to the rating system unless they were replacing long guns in the broadside, they didn't get counted. I found this one, and there's one opposite it:īut can't really see any others in that scene, and 2 minutes later when Norrington leads the Marines to retake the Dauntless, the boarding party has a pretty wide shot that shows the whole length of the topdeck and again, only the one cannon at the bow: So I decided to go check the scene where Will and Jack try and hijack the Dauntless so as to bait out the Interceptor. Obviously filmography-wise, it's because they cleared the deck to have the mass sword fighting scene. In the climax battle, I can't find any shots that have any guns on the topdeck for the Dauntless. Which again is hard to count, but I make 14 guns per broadside in the middle deck, which assuming all 3 gundecks have the same number of guns, would be again, a 42 gun broadside on the 3 ducks.
So she could be a first rate, but it's hard to say.Įdit: nevermind, I missed this one the first go-round: I'm making it 42 guns per side on the gun decks and whatever they have topside as well, which isn't clear in this image, and I can't really find any good indications of in the film itself.

Not helped by the fact that they didn't actually build a full ship for the Dauntless, just some walls, the bow and the stern that they stuck on a barge. The closeups of the boarding action don't have the whole length of the ship, and the shots from a distance in the final battle are obscured by mist and darkness. So I decided to check the film out itself since I have a disney + subscription and might as well, and these are the only two shots I could find that shows the broadside. From that picture, I only make it 42 guns in the Dauntless's broadside, which would make her an 84 gun ship, so a small 2nd rate.
Also, fore and chase guns generally aren't counted in the rating of a warship.ĭauntless should win this by a long sea mile.Īlthough I am calling that 1st rate classification into question.
